Alberta was born into, and married into, into agricultural families. She would have been involved in working the land too, but there is scant evidence of this.

She is one of my paternal 3 x great-grandmothers.

I have no direct records of Alberta’s birth. I know she was the daughter of Francesco Galdies and Anna Barbara. Since they lived in Qormi, it’s probable she was born there. Given her date of marriage, she was born early in the 19th century.

Her son’s act of marriage shows her family name as Galdes¹.

Family

On Wednesday 7 November 1838², she married Giuseppe Attard³. They married in the Roman Catholic parish church of St George’s in Qormi^{4 5}.

On Alberta’s son’s wedding certificate, there is some doubt as to whether she married Giuseppe at all. Luigi’s in-laws are listed as “Gio Maria Bezzina and Maria nee Sammut, his wife” whereas his own parents are listed as “Giuseppe Attard and Alberta Galdes”. The encoding suggests that Alberta and Giuseppe were not married after all, but this is incredibly unlikely.

Notable events

I know she lived in Qormi because that is where her son was born⁶. By 1864, her husband was living in Attard⁷, suggesting she was too.

Like many 19th century women, Alberta didn’t work⁸.

Death

She was still alive in 1864, when her son married⁹.
