Carmelo was a Valletta-born trader who lived a long life, outliving both his wife and his son.
He is one of my paternal great-great-grandfathers.
He was born on Wednesday 11 August 18581 in the parish of St Paul’s Shipwreck, Valletta2, son of Giovanni Borg3 and Maria Camilleri4. His parents baptised him the day after5 in the parish church6 as Carmelo Paolo Francesco Michaele7.
Family

On Sunday 15 October 18828 9, he married Giovanna Parteca10 11 in the Roman Catholic Church of St Rocco12 13 in Valletta, Malta14 15. Fr Matteo Hyzler officiated the wedding ceremony16 17.
Together they had four children that I know of:
- Antonius (born in 1883)
- Paula (born in 1885)
- Giuseppe (born in 1887)
- Peter Paul (born in 1889)

Notable events
He was born and lived in Valletta for a large part of his life, but had moved to Sliema by 1913 when his grandson was born18.
I haven’t found concrete evidence of his address in Valletta yet; there are 7 Carmelo Borgs on the 1900 electoral register19 and it’s hard to narrow it down. There is a Carmelo Borg listed on the 1920 electoral register20. If this is him, then his address was Strada San Nicola 10, Sliema. His wife Giovanna died whilst living with their son21, so I conclude he had moved in with his son by then too.
His last address is 285 Prince of Wales Road, Sliema22. SInce this is also his son’s address, I conclude he’d moved in with his son in his final years.
Profession
Between 188223 and 188724, he worked as a trader, but it is not clear what he traded in. This may have been the family business since his father was a trader too. In 1909, he declared he was a Bottegajo (EN: Wine Merchant)25.
Curiosities
There are some inconsistencies in the records available:
- On his son, Giuseppe’s, birth certificate26, Carmelo declared himself to be 27, which is 2 years older than he really was.
- His death certificate lists him as being 80 years old27, which is 2 years’ older than he really was.
- His wife’s maiden name is shown to be “Pasteca” on his act of death28, despite being “Parteca” on all other documents.
- His mother’s name is shown as “Carmela” on his act of death29, despite being “Maria” on all other documents.
Death
At 01:15 on Tuesday 30 June 193630, he died at his home in Sliema31. His cause of death is listed as senile decay, which is a synonym for “old age”.
His family buried him at the Maria Addolorata Cemetery32.
I have no further information about his death.
