Born in rural Malta at a time when a large part of the island was rural, Giovanni tended fields in the village of Attard.

He is one of my paternal great-great-grandfathers.

He was born on Saturday 23 September 1837¹ in the village of Attard, Malta², son of Salvatore Borg and Maria Zammit³. He was baptised on the same day in the Roman Catholic parish church of Attard⁴ by Fr Michael Attard⁵ as Carmelius Joannes Franciscus Augustus⁶ but to be known as Giovanni⁷.

Family

On Sunday 16 January 1859⁸ he married Anna Xiberras⁹ in the parish church of Attard¹⁰. The banns had been published in November 1858, 2 and 9 January¹¹. The parish priest, Fr Antonius Vassallo officiated¹².

Together they had 1 child I know of:

• Giuseppe.

Notable events

He lived in Attard all his life because his son was born there¹³.

He is listed In the electoral register for 1900 as living at 2, Vicolo No 2, Attard¹⁴. (I know this is him, and not some other Giovanni Borg because his wife lived at this address till death.)

In 1903, he declared himself to be an Agricoltore¹⁵ (EN: Farmer).

Death

He was still alive in 1916 when his granddaughter Maria was born¹⁶, but had died by 1949 when his son died¹⁷.

There is no Giovanni Borg in the electoral register for 1920. I conclude he must have died before 1920.
