Giuseppe was a farmhand who moved to Attard, possibly to take care of property he’d bought for himself.

He is one of my paternal 3 x great-grandparents.

He was born in Qormi, Malta1. I don’t have a precise date for his age, but it’s probable he was born at the beginning of the 19th century.

He was the son of Francesco Attard and Maria Stellini2 3.

Family

On Wednesday 7 November 18384, he married Alberta Galdes5 or Galdies6. They married in the Roman Catholic parish church of St George’s in Qormi7 8.

Together they had 1 child I know of:

Residence

He lived in Qormi because his son was born there9. By 1864, he was living in Attard10.

In 1864, he declared himself to be an Agricoltore (EN: Farmer)11.

Given these two factors, it’s reasonable to extrapolate that Giuseppe had the opportunity to take over larger or better farmland in Attard. It’s clear this was his livelihood, and he wouldn’t have moved his residence and still tended fields in Qormi. Commuting was harder and less profitable in those days. It’s also probable he stayed in Qormi for as long as he worked on his father’s, or family’s, farm. He would have therefore moved once he bought his own. This is all conjecture, and I have no clear evidence of any of this.

Curiosities

When I tried to obtain the act of death from the state archives, I ran into an interesting conundrum. The government office did find a death certificate for a “Giuseppe Attard”12 who was the husband of “Bartolomea Galdies”13, who was a “Husbandman”14, born in Gozo15 and died in Qormi16. His parents were Francesco17 and Maria née Barbara18.

As you can see there are many common data points, but a few interesting variances:

  • The dates in this record match what I wrote above. If he died in 1884 at the age of 75, he would have been born in 1810 or 1811, so this checks out.
  • His parents christian names match, but this does not mean anything because the variety of names wasn’t large.
  • His wife’s name is listed as “Bartolomea” which is a formal version of “Alberta”, so this checks out.
  • His wife’s maiden name is listed as “Galdies” which is close enough to “Galdes” to be a typo.
  • He is described as a “husbandman” which is another way of saying “farmer”, so this checks out.
  • This record claims he died in Qormi, but I know he lived in Attard. He could have moved back to Qormi, of course.
  • His mother’s maiden name does not match what’s listed above in non-official data sources.
  • This record claims he was born in Gozo, but his son’s official act of marriage states Luigi was born in Qormi.

Given the similarities, I am inclined to think this act of death is the correct one but the last two points bother me. I will confirm this once I obtain official records that allow me to properly triangulate the data in question.

Death

He was still alive in 1880 when his grand-daughter was born19.
