A British national before the British ruled the Maltese islands. Isidoro was the grandson of a consul of the British Empire and married into a French family.

This person is my one of my maternal 4 x great-grandfathers.

Isidoro, or Isidore, was born after 1786, which is when his parents married¹. Since his parents lived in Valletta, it is reasonable to conclude he was born there too, which implies the parish of Our Lady of Porto Salvo². He is the son of Emmanuele Farrugia and Guglielma Dodsworth³.

Titles

According to the details of his marriage⁴, he held the title of “Captain of the Town”, which implies Valletta. The title is equivalent to a modern mayor.

Family

On Monday 2 November 1807⁵, he married Giovanna Lebrun Gay⁶ in the Basilica of Our Lady of Porto Salvo, Valletta⁷.

Together they had 1 child I’m aware of:

• Emmanuele, named after his paternal grandfather.

Notable events

For the period 1798 – 1800, during the French occupation, he was a French citizen.

Isidoro’s son sometimes styled his father’s name as “Farrugia Gay”⁸, adding half of Isidoro’s mother’s surname. It is not clear if he chose this, or if this is how his son retroactively wanted the surname to change.

Death

He had died by 1893 when his son died⁹.

I have no further information about the circumstances around his death.
