Valletta-born and raised, Maria Carmela married young, and died before her 50th birthday.

She is one of my paternal 3 x great-grandmothers.

She was born on Sunday 12 July 1840¹ , daughter of Antonio Borg² and Anna neè Falzon³. Fr Feliciano Sarreo⁴ baptised her the same day⁵ in the Roman Catholic Collegiate church St Paul’s Shipwreck, Valletta, Malta⁶. He christened her Maria Carmela Giovanna Barbara Vincentia Paula⁷.

Family

On Tuesday 13 April 1858⁸, she married Giuseppe Parteca⁹ in the Roman Catholic church of St Rocco¹⁰ in Valletta, Malta¹¹. The Rev Giuseppe Guzman officiated¹².

Together they had at least 3 children I’m aware of¹³:

• Antonio Paolo Giovanni, born in 1859
• Spiro Vincenzo Carmelo Paolo, born in 1861
• Giovanna Caterina Saveria Vincenza Maria Paola, born in 1863

Notable events

While her official christian name was Maria Carmela, she was known as Carmela and her wedding certificate lists her as such.

She lived in Valletta for all her life¹⁴, as far as I can tell.

As was common in those days, she didn’t work and declared herself to be senza mestiere (EN: Without a profession) when her daughter was born¹⁵.

Death

She had already died by 1882 when her daughter married¹⁶.

I have no further information about her death.
