Maria lived her whole life in the village of Attard like many of her family members.

She is one of my paternal 3 x great-grandmothers.

She was born on Sunday 25 April 1813¹ in Attard, Malta², daughter of Giovanni Zammit and Xaveria Bellia³.

Naming their daughter Maria was a local tradition; this is the name of Attard’s patron saint.

Parish priest Fr. Martin Zerafa baptised her on the same day in the Roman Catholic parish church of St Mary in Attard⁴.

Family

On Sunday 19 July 1835, she married Salvatore Borg⁵ in Attard. The banns had been published on the 29th June, the 5th and 12th July.

Together they had 5 child I’m aware of⁶:

• Giovanni
• Carmina
• Paolo
• Giuseppe
• Giusta

Since her son was born and baptised in Attard⁷, she obviously lived in Attard after marriage.

Occupation

I have no factual evidence of any activity she carried out. Since Attard was a rural village, it’s likely her husband had, or worked, the land. If this is the case it’s likely she did too.

Death

I have no clear information about her death.

Given Maltese customs at the time, it is likely she died and was buried in Attard.
