Carmelo was a Valletta-born trader who lived a long life, outliving both his wife and his son.

He is one of my paternal great-great-grandfathers.

He was born on Wednesday 11 August 1858¹ in the parish of St Paul’s Shipwreck, Valletta^{1 2}, son of Giovanni Borg¹ and Maria Camilleri¹. His parents baptised him the day after¹ in the parish church¹ as Carmelo Paolo Francesco Michele¹.

Family

On Sunday 15 October 1882^{2 3}), he married Giovanna Parteca^{2 3}) in the Roman Catholic Church of St Rocco^{2 3}) in Valletta, Malta^{2 3}). Fr Matteo Hyzler officiated the wedding ceremony^{2 3}).

Together they had 1 child I’m aware of:

On Giuseppe’s birth certificate, he declared himself to be 27, which is older than he really was.

Notable events

He was born and lived in Valletta for a large part of his life, but had moved to Sliema by 1913 when his grandson was born⁴.

I haven’t found concrete evidence of his address in Valletta yet; there are 7 Carmelo Borgs on the 1900 electoral register⁵ and it’s hard to narrow it down. There is a Carmelo Borg listed on the 1920 electoral register⁶. If this is him, then his address was Strada San Nicola 10, Sliema. His wife Giovanna died whilst living with their son⁷, so I conclude he had moved in with his son by then too.

Profession

Between 1882² and 1887⁸, he worked as a trader, but it is not clear what he traded in. This may have been the family business since his father was a trader too. In 1909, he declared he was a Bottegajo (EN: Wine Merchant)⁹.

Death

He was still alive in 1931 when his son Giuseppe died¹⁰.

I have no further information about his death at present.
